Smart water solutions in Bhopal Upper Lake, Kolar and Narmada, and still uneven taps

Bhopal draws on the Upper Lake, Kolar, Kerwa and the Narmada, yet one burst on the Kolar line once left about 60 per cent of the city dry for two days. We keep your tanks ready for that.

How water reaches you in Bhopal

Bhopal Municipal Corporation supplies around 450 MLD from four surface sources, the Upper Lake, the Kolar and Kerwa dams and the Narmada, through about 15 treatment plants and 173 overhead tanks. Old Bhopal around Budhwara still leans on the Upper Lake, while Kolar, Shahpura, Arera Colony and MP Nagar went dry when the Kolar pipeline burst in 2021. In 2026 the corporation took public tubewells off drinking duty after E. coli turned up in a Khanugaon well. Devyami helps homes, societies and Mandideep factories catch supply reliably, treat any borewell water they still use, and keep pumps safe when a main fails.

  1. Step 1

    Lake and dams

Raw water comes from the Upper Lake (Bhojtal), the Kolar and Kerwa dams, and the Narmada.

  2. Step 2

    Treatment plants

It is treated at about 15 plants, among them the 50 MLD Manuabhan Tekri plant near Lalghati.

  3. Step 3

    Tanks and mains

BMC pushes it through some 3,885 km of pipeline, 173 overhead tanks and 110 underground reservoirs to roughly 2.7 lakh household connections.

  4. Step 4

    Your tank

From your connection it fills a sump or tank, and your pump and controller decide whether it lasts the day.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Bhopal's water, honestly

What Bhopal throws at your water system, and the fix for each

One pipeline, much of the city

In April 2021 a burst on the roughly 30-year-old Kolar pipeline left about 60 per cent of Bhopal without water for two days. When supply returned, pressure was low in areas from Kolar and Shahpura to Arera Colony, MP Nagar and TT Nagar.

How we fix it

A twin motor driver runs two pumps with shared duty and automatic changeover, and its level control refills your overhead tank as soon as weak or late supply reaches the sump.

Upper Lake strain in old Bhopal

About six lakh residents of old Bhopal depend on the Upper Lake, drawing around 86 MLD. In the dry summer of 2019 the lake fell below its 1,652-foot minimum level and old-city areas were being supplied on alternate days.

How we fix it

Wireless level sensors and the Devyami IoT app show how much each supply actually delivered and how fast your building is using it, so you can ration before the tank empties.

Borewells you should not drink from

In 2026 BMC banned drinking water from public tubewells, hand pumps, wells and stepwells after E. coli was found in a Khanugaon well, and moved to decommission 111 of its 247 tubewells. A CGWB study of the Bhopal urban area found nitrate linked to sewage, and iron and manganese of natural origin, in groundwater.

How we fix it

If your home or campus still uses a private borewell, we fit iron-removal and multigrade filtration with UV and RO for drinking water, sized to a lab test.

When the lake overflows

In September 2026 three days of rain took the Upper Lake to its full level of 1,666.8 feet, Bhadbhada's gates were opened and the administration alerted low-lying areas. Several parts of the city were waterlogged and some road surfaces began breaking up.

How we fix it

A dewatering pump with automatic level start protects basements, lift pits and ground-floor sumps, and the app tells you when it switches on.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Bhopal run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Bhopal

What people here ask us

Our society on Kolar Road loses water whenever the Kolar line has a problem. What should we install?

Store at least a day's demand and automate both ends. A twin motor driver with level control fills the overhead tanks as soon as supply reaches the sump and switches to the standby pump if one fails, and the Devyami IoT app shows tank levels so the committee can arrange tankers early.

Can we still use our borewell for drinking in Bhopal?

BMC has stopped using public tubewells for drinking after E. coli was found in a Khanugaon well, and groundwater in parts of the city carries nitrate, iron and manganese. If you use a private borewell, test it and treat it; we fit iron removal, multigrade filtration and UV or RO matched to the results.

Is a heat pump worth it in Bhopal?

For most families, hostels and hotels, yes. December nights can dip to around 7°C, and a heat pump makes hot water with far less electricity than an electric geyser. Where you have an open, sunny roof, pair it with a solar heater for the summer months.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Bhopal?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Bhopal's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
