Smart water solutions in Kochi Surrounded by water, still short of drinking water

Kochi gets around 3,000 mm of rain and sits on the backwaters, yet tail-end areas like West Kochi can still run dry. We help homes, flats and hotels store, pump, treat and heat water through every season.

How water reaches you in Kochi

Kochi's piped water comes mainly from the Periyar at Aluva, far enough upstream to escape seawater, with the Maradu plant treating Muvattupuzha river water for West Kochi. Kerala Water Authority supply thins at the tail end; in 2023 Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Chellanam went almost a month without piped water after pumps failed at Pazhoor. Shallow groundwater near the backwaters can turn brackish, and low-lying areas waterlog in the monsoon. From Kakkanad to Thrippunithura, we automate tanks, treat well water, install dewatering pumps and fit heat pumps suited to humid air.

  1. Step 1

    Two river intakes

Water is drawn from the Periyar at Aluva, upstream of the reach where seawater pushes in, and from the Muvattupuzha at Pazhoor near Piravom.

  2. Step 2

    Aluva and Maradu

Treated water travels from Aluva via Perumanoor and Elamkulam, while the 100 MLD Maradu plant sends Muvattupuzha water towards West Kochi.

  3. Step 3

    KWA distribution

Kerala Water Authority, with the corporation's water works, distributes it, and supply thins by the time it reaches tail ends like Fort Kochi and Chellanam.

  4. Step 4

    Your sump

A sump or well buffers the supply, and a pump lifts it to the overhead tank of the house or flat.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Kochi's water, honestly

What Kochi throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Tail-end supply that runs dry

West Kochi's demand is put at 70 to 100 MLD, while supply is around 52 MLD before losses. When two of three pumps at Pazhoor failed in January 2023, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Palluruthy and Chellanam went almost a month without piped water.

How we fix it

A motor driver with level control fills your tank automatically whenever water reaches the sump and stops the pump the moment it runs dry, so a weak supply is never wasted.

Breakdowns you hear about late

Pump and electrical failures at the Pazhoor pump house have repeatedly cut Maradu plant output, including a run of breakdowns from December 2025. Each outage leaves buildings with only what is already in their tanks.

How we fix it

Sensors on sumps and tanks feed the Devyami app, which alerts you as levels fall and shows how much storage is left, so you can ration or book a tanker before the taps run dry.

Brackish water near the backwaters

CGWB records saline water ingress in the shallow alluvial aquifer of the district's western part, which is connected to the backwaters, and brackish groundwater along tidal inlets. A sample from Chellanam was found saline.

How we fix it

We test the well or borewell first, then fit filtration and RO for drinking water, with an RO controller tracking pressure and treated-water quality.

Monsoon waterlogging in low areas

Much of Kochi lies close to sea level and receives around 3,000 mm of rain a year, about two-thirds of it from June to September. Low-lying areas bordering the backwaters are prone to waterlogging in the rains.

How we fix it

Dewatering pumps with automatic level start keep cellar parking, lift pits and pump rooms clear, sized for monsoon downpours rather than light showers.

Humid air, cloudy monsoon weeks

Kochi's temperatures usually stay between about 23 and 31 degrees C with moderate to high humidity, and the long southwest monsoon brings weeks of heavy cloud and rain.

How we fix it

A heat pump draws heat from that warm, moist air and keeps working through cloudy weeks when solar heaters fall short, which suits homes, hotels and homestays alike.

Through the year

Kochi's water, season by season

Summer

The dry months before the monsoon strain tail-end supply, so storage, automatic tank filling and level alerts matter most.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

From June to September the rain is heavy and persistent, bringing waterlogging to low-lying areas, the season when dewatering pumps earn their place.

Dewatering pumps and UV treatment →

Winter

The northeast monsoon brings a second, lighter rainy spell and the air stays warm and humid, good conditions for a heat pump.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Kochi run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Kochi

What people here ask us

Our flat in Fort Kochi often gets weak supply. How can we make sure the tank fills?

Use the sump as your buffer and let a motor driver with level control lift water to the overhead tank whenever it arrives, day or night. Add sensors and the Devyami app so you can watch storage fall during a disruption and plan before you run out.

Is well water near the backwaters safe to drink?

Not always. Shallow wells near the backwaters can turn brackish, so test before you rely on one. For drinking we recommend filtration with RO and an RO controller; for washing and gardens, filtration alone may be enough.

Which water heater works best through Kochi's monsoon?

A heat pump. It draws heat from Kochi's warm, humid air and keeps working when monsoon clouds cut solar output. We size it for your household, hotel or homestay and handle installation and service.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Kochi?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Kochi's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
