Smart water solutions in Kanpur Ganga water in the mains, chromium pockets underground

Kanpur's Jalkal Vibhag pipes treated Ganga water across six zones, but in parts of the city the groundwater below carries chromium from old industrial waste. We help you store, pump and treat both safely.

How water reaches you in Kanpur

Kanpur's piped water starts at the Ganga Barrage and the older Bhairoghat intake, and the Jalkal Vibhag of Kanpur Nagar Nigam, once the Kanpur Jal Sansthan, distributes it across six zones covering about 80 per cent of the city. Old, narrow mains toward Rawatpur and Dada Nagar are being replaced with lines up to 1.8 metres wide. Underground the picture is harder: chromium contamination around Rakhi Mandi and Juhi, and at Rania in Kanpur Dehat, is before the National Green Tribunal. Devyami installs level controllers and protected pumps for homes and factories, RO plants checked against lab results, and heat pumps for cold January mornings.

  1. Step 1

    Ganga intakes

Raw water is drawn from the Ganga at the Ganga Barrage and at Bhairoghat, where a bypass channel now carries river water to an intake the river has drifted away from.

  2. Step 2

    New trunk mains

Treated water leaves the Ganga Barrage works, and UP Jal Nigam is laying about 10 km of new 1,400 to 1,800 mm mains from Company Bagh toward Phool Bagh and Bara Devi.

  3. Step 3

    Six-zone network

Jalkal Vibhag distributes it through six zones, each run by an executive engineer, covering about 80 per cent of the municipal area.

  4. Step 4

    Your tank

At home the supply fills a sump or tank; where piped water does not reach, a borewell or tanker fills it instead.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

What Kanpur throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Chromium in the groundwater

Groundwater contamination from abandoned chromium waste at Rania in Kanpur Dehat and Rakhi Mandi in Kanpur Nagar, along with industrial pollution at Godhrauli, is being heard by the National Green Tribunal, which in June 2025 ordered the state to ensure a minimum supply of clean drinking water. Health camps in early 2025 tested residents of Juhi Bamburahia, Jajmau, Panki and Nauraiya Kheda for chromium exposure, and IITR has proposed a pilot plant to remove hexavalent chromium from groundwater.

How we fix it

Do not drink untested borewell water here. We specify RO plants against a lab report that includes hexavalent chromium, and the APCON RO controller tracks pressure and output so you know the system is still doing its job.

Old, narrow mains

Kanpur's piped supply has long fallen short of its requirement, and UP Jal Nigam is now replacing old narrow lines with about 10 km of new mains from the Ganga Barrage to serve around 40 lakh people. The new lines run from Company Bagh to Phool Bagh, and to Bara Devi via Rawatpur and Dada Nagar.

How we fix it

An APCON motor driver starts your booster pump when water reaches the sump, fills the overhead tank and stops, with dry-run protection for days the line delivers little.

Factories under closer scrutiny

Kanpur Nagar has close to 38,000 Udyam-registered manufacturing units, and the state has been asked to list them all so sources of chromium can be traced. In 2025, sludge at the Jajmau STP tested at 9.57 mg/g of chromium, above the CPCB limit of 5 mg/g.

How we fix it

The Devyami IoT app logs tank levels, pump run-hours and RO plant readings for your unit, giving you a clear water record when inspectors or buyers ask.

Rain packed into two months

Kanpur receives around 865 mm of rain a year, and about 495 mm of it typically falls in July and August. That is when basements, lift pits and underground sumps are most at risk of taking in water.

How we fix it

A dewatering pump with automatic float or level start clears water as it collects, and the app alerts you when it runs so a failed pump is never discovered too late.

Monsoon

July and August bring most of the city's roughly 865 mm of rain, and low basements and sumps need dewatering.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Kanpur run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Kanpur

What people here ask us

Is borewell water safe to drink in Kanpur?

Not without testing. Chromium contamination of groundwater around Rakhi Mandi and Rania is before the National Green Tribunal, which has pressed for clean piped water in affected areas. Use municipal water where you have it, and if you rely on a borewell, get a lab test that includes hexavalent chromium before we size an RO plant.

Our factory in Panki needs reliable water and clean records. What do you suggest?

Automate first, then monitor. APCON motor drivers protect each pump against dry run, overload, voltage faults and single phasing, a multi-pump controller holds process or fire-line pressure, and the Devyami IoT app keeps a log of levels, run-hours and RO readings.

What is the best water heater for a Kanpur home?

With January nights around 8°C and very hot summers, a heat pump is the efficient year-round choice, and solar works well outside the winter months. We size heat pumps to your family or hostel and can connect them to an existing tank.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Kanpur?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Kanpur's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
