Pune's water

Khadakwasla dams, 24x7 meters and tanker-fed suburbs

Pune drinks from the four-dam Khadakwasla chain, yet in parts of Baner, Dhayari or Wagholi water has still arrived by tanker. As metered 24x7 supply rolls out, we help societies and campuses store, pump and treat water well.

Pune's water starts in Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar, collects at Khadakwasla and enters a PMC network that drew around 1,680–1,700 million litres a day in 2024, with Bhama Askhed serving the east. Metered 24x7 equitable supply is entering trials in about 60 of the city's 144 zones, while newer belts such as Sus, Mhalunge, Kirkatwadi and Lohgaon have leaned on tankers. Devyami's level controllers, pressure pumps and IoT monitoring help societies use every litre they receive, and our filters, RO and UV systems treat borewell and tanker water before it reaches a tap.

How water reaches you in Pune

  1. Step 1

    Four dams

Monsoon rain fills Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar, which feed Khadakwasla at the foot of the chain; together they hold about 29.15 TMC against a city need of roughly 21 TMC a year.

  2. Step 2

    Treatment plants

PMC treats water drawn from the Khadakwasla chain at its plants, while the Bhama Askhed scheme supplies the eastern side of the city.

  3. Step 3

    Zones and meters

Under the 24x7 equitable supply project, water is moving into metered distribution zones through 83 new overhead tanks and more than 1,000 km of new pipes.

  4. Step 4

    Your society

Until that is complete, many societies still fill an underground sump at set hours and pump up to overhead tanks, topping up with borewell or tanker water where supply runs short.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Pune's water, honestly

What Pune throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Tanker-fed fringes

PMC's tankers made about 4 lakh trips in 2023–24, with Ambegaon, Dhayari, Kirkatwadi, Sus, Baner, Balewadi, Wagholi and Lohgaon among the areas worst served. In the 34 merged villages, tanker trips in the 2024 monsoon actually exceeded the summer count as new housing projects came up.

How we fix it

LoRa level sensors and the Devyami app log every tank's level, so you know when a tanker is due, whether it delivered a full load and how fast the society is drawing water.

The move to metered supply

Civil work on Pune's equitable water supply project is about 88 percent complete, with about 2.75 lakh meters planned and trial billing in roughly 60 of 144 zones from October 2026. Once water is metered, an overflowing overhead tank becomes a line on the bill.

How we fix it

A multi-tank level controller fills each building's overhead tank in order from one pump set and stops at full, so metered water is not lost to overflow and pumps never run dry.

Contamination scares on the fringe

In January 2025 the state health minister said about 80 percent of suspected Guillain-Barré cases in Pune came from areas around a large well in Nanded village on Sinhagad Road, and PMC sent tanker water to housing societies in Kirkatwadi and Nanded. Stool samples showed Campylobacter jejuni and norovirus in some patients.

How we fix it

A multigrade filter followed by UV disinfection, sized for the society's daily draw, treats well, borewell and tanker water at the inlet before it reaches the overhead tanks; RO can be added for drinking water.

Cool mornings in December

On 9 December 2025 Shivajinagar and Pashan both fell to about 8.4 °C, and CGWB puts Pune district's winter minimum near 6.8 °C. Hostels, PGs and hospitals feel it in their hot-water demand.

How we fix it

Solar water heaters cover sunny days, and a heat pump on our heat pump controller takes over on cold or cloudy mornings while using far less electricity than resistance geysers.

Flash floods along the nalas

On the night of 25 September 2019, heavy rain over south Pune filled Katraj lake and pushed the Ambil Odha over its banks, with Sahakarnagar and Aranyeshwar among the worst-hit areas. Basements and parking levels near such streams take water first.

How we fix it

Twin dewatering pumps on a twin motor driver start automatically on rising level and alternate duty, keeping a standby ready if one pump trips.

Through the year

Pune's water, season by season

Summer

Tanker demand climbs in fringe areas through March to May, and the state water resources department has pressed PMC to draw less from the dams.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

Monsoon rain refills the dams, but a cloudburst over the city itself, like the one in September 2019, can flood nalas within hours.

Dewatering pumps and UV treatment →

Winter

December nights can dip to around 8 °C in Shivajinagar and Pashan, so solar heaters need a backup for the coldest mornings.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Pune run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Pune

What people here ask us

Our Pune society is moving to metered 24x7 supply. What should we change in the pump room?

Start with automation: a multi-tank level controller fills each building's overhead tank in order and stops at full, so metered water is not lost to overflow. Add dry-run and voltage protection on the pumps, and LoRa level sensors with the Devyami app so the committee can track levels and spot leaks from an unusual rise in draw.

We depend on tanker water in Wagholi. How do we make it safe to use?

Treat it at the inlet. A multigrade filter removes silt and turbidity, a softener handles hardness if your test shows it, and UV disinfection deals with bacteria before water reaches the overhead tanks. For drinking, add RO with our RO controller at a central point or the kitchen.

Is borewell water in Pune safe to drink?

It depends on the location. CGWB testing across Pune district found nitrate above the 45 mg/L limit in 49 of 178 shallow-aquifer samples, so get a lab test first. If nitrate or TDS is high, an RO plant with our RO controller is the reliable fix; otherwise filtration and UV may be enough.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Pune?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Pune's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
