Smart water solutions in Bhubaneswar Drinkable taps arriving, borewells still filling the gap

Bhubaneswar is rolling out water you can drink straight from the tap, but demand still runs ahead of treatment capacity. We keep homes, apartments and campuses running on whichever source they have today.

From source to your tap

How water reaches you in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar's water comes from three rivers, the Mahanadi at Mundali, the Kuakhai and Daya, treated at six plants and supplied by WATCO. Under the Drink from Tap mission, parts of the city now get pressurised, metered water meant to be drunk without a filter. But demand of about 304 MLD outruns roughly 238 MLD of capacity and groundwater makes up the rest, so many apartment blocks lean on borewells, and in places such as Khandagiri CGWB has recorded iron above the safe limit. Devyami's pumping, treatment and protection systems bridge that gap until the new Mundali plant comes on line.

  1. Step 1

    Three rivers

Raw water is drawn from the Mahanadi at Mundali and from the Kuakhai and Daya rivers.

  2. Step 2

    Six treatment systems

It is treated at Mundali, Palasuni, Chandrasekharpur, Naharkanta, Bhuasuni and a high-level tank system, then sent through trunk mains into the city.

  3. Step 3

    Metered zones

Under Drink from Tap, WATCO divides the network into district metered areas of roughly 500 to 3,000 homes, so leaks and quality can be tracked zone by zone.

  4. Step 4

    Tap or borewell

In covered areas the tap itself is meant to be drinkable; elsewhere, and in many apartments, a sump and a borewell still do the work.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Bhubaneswar's water, honestly

What Bhubaneswar throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Apartments waiting on the main

Figures reviewed by the state in January 2026 put the BMC area's demand at about 304 MLD against existing capacity of 238.5 MLD, with the 65.5 MLD gap met from groundwater. WATCO expects to supply all apartments and institutions only once a new 130 MLD plant at Mundali is commissioned, so until then many societies run on borewells and sumps.

How we fix it

We size the borewell pump, sump and a hydro-pneumatic pressure system together, and a multi-pump controller holds steady pressure on every floor while sharing duty across the pumps.

Iron in Khandagiri borewells

CGWB has recorded iron above the 1 mg/l limit at Khandagiri (2.8 mg/l) and Jagannathprasad (4.6 mg/l) in Khurda district, and high nitrate in a few Khandagiri wells. It notes that high iron gives water an astringent taste and an unpleasant colour.

How we fix it

An aeration and iron-removal filter followed by multigrade filtration cleans borewell water for the whole building, with an RO stage, watched by our RO controller, for drinking water where nitrate is a concern.

Main breaks and planned shutdowns

A crack in the main from the Mundali barrage once cut supply to Dumduma, Chandaka, Pokhariput and parts of Saheed Nagar, and in October 2021 WATCO shut supply to the entire city for most of a day to repair the Palasuni main. A full sump, and knowing how full it is, makes those days uneventful.

How we fix it

The Devyami app shows sump and overhead tank levels live and alerts you when storage falls below a set mark, so you can ration early, call a tanker in time, or switch to the borewell before taps run dry.

Cyclones that take out power

Cyclone Fani struck in May 2019 with winds of about 175 km/h and brought down more than 1.5 lakh electricity poles in Odisha. Five days later the BMC was still running generators to pump water to piped homes once each morning, with damaged 33 kV and 11 kV lines delaying recovery.

How we fix it

An APCON motor driver protects each pump against under and over voltage and single phasing when power returns unsteady or a generator takes over, and restarts the pump once supply is healthy.

Monsoon waterlogging in low areas

In July 2025, two days of continuous rain left Laxmisagar and Badagada waterlogged after a drain to the Daya West Canal was blocked. The BMC had to cut the Badagada canal embankment in two places to let the water out.

How we fix it

Float-operated dewatering pumps keep basements, parking levels and pump rooms clear, and we place panels and motors where rising water cannot reach them.

Through the year

Bhubaneswar's water, season by season

Summer

May is the hottest month, with mean daily highs around 38°C, and the groundwater gap bites hardest; the state has ordered a survey of areas facing acute summer shortages.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

Heavy spells can overwhelm drains in low areas like Laxmisagar, and cyclones at either end of the monsoon, like Fani in May 2019, can cut power for days.

Dewatering pumps and UV treatment →

Winter

December is the coldest month with mean temperatures near 16°C, mild enough for a solar water heater to carry most homes through the season.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Bhubaneswar run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Bhubaneswar

What people here ask us

Our apartment in Patia still has no WATCO connection. How should we set up the borewell and sump?

Treat the borewell, sump and pumps as one system. Devyami sizes the borewell pump to its yield, protects it with an APCON motor driver against dry run and voltage swings, and adds a hydro-pneumatic system so upper floors get steady pressure. When the WATCO line arrives, the same sump and controls take it in without rework.

Our borewell water leaves orange stains on tiles and buckets. Can it be fixed?

Orange staining usually points to dissolved iron, which CGWB has found above the safe limit in parts of Khurda district, including Khandagiri. An aeration and iron-removal filter with a multigrade stage fixes it for the whole building, and we test first so the filter is sized to your water rather than guessed.

If my area is under Drink from Tap, do I still need an RO?

Drink from Tap water is meant to be safe to drink straight from the tap without extra filtration, so for that supply alone an RO usually just wastes water. If your home also uses borewell water, treat that source instead. Devyami can automate the switch between the two and show both levels in the IoT app.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Bhubaneswar?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Bhubaneswar's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
