Smart water solutions in Chandigarh Kajauli canal water, morning and evening, sector by sector

Chandigarh's water comes down the Bhakra Main Line to Kajauli and reaches homes in morning and evening windows. We automate the fill, lift pressure to upper floors and heat water through winters that have touched freezing.

How water reaches you in Chandigarh

Chandigarh drinks Bhakra water pumped from Kajauli on the Bhakra Main Line to the Sector 39 waterworks, then shared through zonal waterworks in Sectors 12, 26, 32, 37 and 52, with tubewells topping up. An estimated 10 to 15 MGD leaks from two ageing concrete lines, and when they are shut for repairs, supply narrows to an early-morning slot and a weaker evening one. From Le Corbusier-era sector houses to Housing Board flats in Manimajra, our controllers catch each window, pressure systems lift water upstairs, and heat pumps take over from geysers in winter.

  1. Step 1

    Bhakra Main Line

Water from the Bhakra system flows down the Bhakra Main Line canal to the Kajauli waterworks near Morinda in Ropar district.

  2. Step 2

    To Sector 39

Six pipelines, each built for about 20 MGD, carry it some 27 km to the main waterworks in Sector 39.

  3. Step 3

    Zonal waterworks

From there it is distributed through waterworks in Sectors 12, 26, 32, 37 and 52, with municipal tubewells adding to the supply.

  4. Step 4

    Your rooftop tank

It reaches homes in scheduled morning and evening windows, filling the tank that has to carry the household through the rest of the day.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Chandigarh's water, honestly

What Chandigarh throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Kajauli shutdowns and leaks

The city loses an estimated 10 to 15 MGD of the 35 MGD sent through two ageing concrete pipelines from Kajauli. During a 48-hour repair shutdown on 30 September and 1 October 2026, supply was regulated to 3:30–9 am at full pressure and 6–8 pm at low pressure.

How we fix it

A level controller with a sump sensor fills your tanks during whatever window you actually get, stops the pump when the sump runs dry, and restarts on its own when water returns.

Weak evenings, thirsty upper floors

Evening supply is the first to lose pressure when Kajauli lines are under repair. In two- and three-storey houses and Housing Board blocks, the upper floors feel it first.

How we fix it

A compact hydro-pneumatic system with two pumps sharing duty draws from stored water and holds steady pressure on every floor, whatever the mains is doing.

Soft canal water, harder pockets

MC Chandigarh's January 2025 tests found TDS of around 110–130 mg/l at the sector waterworks, while points in Vikas Nagar, Manimajra and Mauli Jagran tested above 300 mg/l with roughly double the hardness. All were within prescribed limits, but the difference shows in taste and in appliances.

How we fix it

For canal-fed homes, sediment filtration and UV are usually enough, so we do not push RO where it is not needed; for harder pockets or private borewells, we size a softener or RO to the test result.

Higher tariffs, costlier overflows

The municipal corporation raised water tariffs by 1.5 to 2.5 times in 2021. An overflowing terrace tank or a silent leak now shows up clearly on the bill.

How we fix it

Our IoT app shows tank levels and pump activity live, flags overflows and unusual overnight use, and keeps a daily usage record you can check against the bill.

Winters that touch freezing

Chandigarh's record low is 0.0°C and January nights average around 7°C, while summers have touched 46.7°C. In a large sector house, that can mean several geysers running every morning for months.

How we fix it

A heat pump or solar water heater with a smart controller supplies every bathroom through December and January at far lower running cost than a row of geysers.

Afternoons can reach the mid-40s while supply stays on a fixed timetable, so tanks need to fill completely in every window.

Monsoon

Sukhna Lake, named Chandigarh's first Ramsar site in October 2026, fills from Shivalik streams; in August 2026 a floodgate was opened at 1,162.95 ft and Mohali and Panchkula were put on alert.

January nights average around 7°C with a record low of 0°C, making efficient water heating the main job of the season.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Chandigarh run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Chandigarh

What people here ask us

Water comes to our Chandigarh house only in the morning and evening. How do we stop running out by afternoon?

Store the whole window, automatically. Our APCON motor-driver fills the sump and the overhead tank whenever supply is on, protects the pump from dry runs and overload, and needs nobody to switch it on at 4 am. If the tank is small for your household, we size additional storage with level sensors so nothing overflows.

Do I need an RO purifier in Chandigarh?

Often not for canal-fed supply, which municipal tests show is low in dissolved solids. Filtration and UV usually make it safe and pleasant to drink. If you use a private borewell or live in a pocket where tests show higher TDS, we test first and recommend a softener or RO with an RO controller only if the numbers call for it.

Is a heat pump worth it for a large Chandigarh kothi?

Usually yes, when several bathrooms need hot water from December to February. One heat pump, or a solar water heater backed by a heat pump, replaces multiple geysers, and our heat-pump-controller schedules heating around morning and evening use to keep running costs low.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Chandigarh?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Chandigarh's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
