Smart water solutions in Ludhiana A city of 1,262 tubewells, waiting for the canal

Ludhiana still runs entirely on groundwater, pumped straight into the mains for around seven hours a day. We protect the pumps, store the water and treat what the aquifer carries.

From source to your tap

How water reaches you in Ludhiana

Every tap in Ludhiana is fed by groundwater: about 350 MLD from 1,262 municipal tubewells, mostly pumped straight into the mains because most of the city's elevated reservoirs are out of use. A World Bank and AIIB-backed plant at Bilga will treat Sutlej water from the Sirhind canal system, with completion expected by March 2028; until then supply stays intermittent and the aquifer keeps falling. From Model Town and Sarabha Nagar to Focal Point's units, we automate storage, protect deep submersibles against dry runs and electrical faults, and treat water that municipal tests have flagged for uranium and nitrate.

  1. Step 1

    Deep tubewells

Municipal tubewells reach 100–130 m (shallow) and 165–200 m (deep) into the aquifer beneath the city.

  2. Step 2

    Chlorinated at source

With no treatment plant yet, the water is disinfected with liquid chlorine at each tubewell outlet.

  3. Step 3

    Pumped into mains

Most tubewells pump straight into about 2,500 km of distribution pipes, because 51 of the city's 67 elevated reservoirs are not in use.

  4. Step 4

    Your tank, briefly

Water reaches homes intermittently, for around seven hours a day, so your tank and pump decide how much of it you keep.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Ludhiana's water, honestly

What Ludhiana throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Supply only while tubewells run

Because most municipal tubewells feed the network directly, supply follows the pumps and is intermittent, around seven hours a day. In October 2026 an NIT Jalandhar assessment reportedly found 19 overhead reservoirs, including those at Focal Point Phases 5 to 8, Urban Estate and BRS Nagar, unfit for repair; the corporation has asked for a retest.

How we fix it

A level controller fills your underground or overhead tank whenever pressure arrives, cuts the pump on a dry run, and protects the motor against overload and single phasing, so you keep everything the intermittent supply gives.

Uranium and nitrate in tubewell water

Municipal testing at 40 locations found uranium above the WHO guideline in 14 samples, including Friends Colony, Aman Nagar, Giaspura, Shanti Nagar and Haibowal Khurd. Nitrate of roughly 47–95 mg/l, above the BIS limit of 45, and fluoride above 1.5 mg/l have also been reported in the city's tubewell water.

How we fix it

RO is the proven way to bring uranium and nitrate down; our RO controller monitors feed pressure and output TDS so you know the plant is actually working, not just running.

An aquifer that keeps dropping

Water levels in the city sit around 10–20 m below ground, the district's long-term decline runs from about 0.1 to 1.3 m a year, and Ludhiana is classed as over-exploited. Across Punjab, 115 of 153 blocks fall in the same category.

How we fix it

Our IoT app tracks borewell run-hours, tank levels and dry-run trips, so homes and factories see early when a submersible starts to suck air and can lower it before the motor burns out.

Process water for Focal Point

Ludhiana's economy rests on small and mid-sized hosiery, textile, bicycle, auto-parts and machine-tool units, many of them in Focal Point, where several municipal overhead reservoirs are now due for rebuilding. Units that run their own borewells cannot afford a stopped line.

How we fix it

A multi-pump controller runs several borewell and booster pumps as one system with duty rotation and VFD pressure control, so a single pump trip never halts a dyeing or washing line.

Punjab winters, Punjab summers

Ludhiana's record low is −2.2°C and January nights average about 6°C, while summers have reached 48.3°C. Hot water is a daily need for a good four months.

How we fix it

A heat pump or solar water heater with a smart controller keeps bathrooms supplied through the cold months at a fraction of geyser running cost, and scales from family kothis to hostels.

Through the year

Ludhiana's water, season by season

Summer

Afternoons climb well past 40°C, with a record of 48.3°C, while tubewells work hardest, so dry-run and overload protection matter most in May and June.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

The monsoon brings most of the year's rain, and Ludhiana district has about 6,650 hectares classed as flood-prone, so low-lying basements and pump pits need dewatering cover.

Dewatering pumps and UV treatment →

Winter

Nights drop to around 5–7°C and occasionally below freezing, so hot water becomes a daily essential from December to February.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Ludhiana run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Ludhiana

What people here ask us

Municipal water in Ludhiana comes only for a few hours. How do I make sure my tank fills?

Let a controller watch for it. Our APCON motor-driver senses when water reaches the sump, runs the pump to fill the overhead tank, and stops it on a dry run, while protecting the motor against overload, voltage problems and single phasing. You keep the full supply without anyone waiting by the switch.

Is Ludhiana's groundwater safe to drink without RO?

Not without testing. Municipal tests have found uranium above the WHO guideline at several locations and nitrate above the BIS limit, and ordinary filters do not remove either. We test your water and, where needed, install RO with an RO controller that tracks pressure and output quality.

Will the canal water project change what I need at home?

It will improve the source, but planning still matters. The Bilga plant is expected by March 2028, and the Sirhind canal is closed for 21 to 30 days once or twice a year, when the corporation falls back on tubewells. Automation that handles both sources, and treatment sized for groundwater weeks, stays useful after the switch.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Ludhiana?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Ludhiana's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
