Smart water solutions in Visakhapatnam When the reservoirs run low, every sump counts

Visakhapatnam leans on the Yeleru canal and a ring of rain-fed reservoirs, so a weak monsoon shows up in your taps within weeks. We help apartments, homes and industry store, treat and use water carefully.

From source to your tap

How water reaches you in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam's water comes mostly from the Yeleru reservoir, historically close to 60 per cent of supply, and from rain-fed reservoirs such as Raiwada, Thatipudi and Meghadrigedda, with Godavari water lifted into the Yeleru system. In August 2026, after a weak June and July, GVMC was supplying about 320 MLD against a need of 400, some localities got water only every two or three days, and borewells in many areas dried up. For the city's roughly 8,000 apartment complexes, from MVP Colony to Madhurawada, Devyami's level automation, RO plants for brackish coastal borewells and pump protection make each delivery count.

  1. Step 1

    Reservoirs and canal

Raw water comes down the Yeleru canal, topped up with Godavari water lifted at Purushothapatnam, and from reservoirs such as Raiwada, Thatipudi, Meghadrigedda and Mudasarlova.

  2. Step 2

    Treatment plants

It is treated at plants including the Narava works, which is being linked by a new pipeline to HPCL and other industries along Port Road, before GVMC sends it into the city network.

  3. Step 3

    Zone by zone

GVMC supplies the city zone by zone, and when reservoirs run low some localities get water only every two or three days.

  4. Step 4

    Sump and tankers

Apartments collect what arrives in a sump and make up the rest from borewells or from GVMC and private tankers.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Visakhapatnam's water, honestly

What Visakhapatnam throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Water every two or three days

In August 2026, with reservoir and groundwater levels down, piped supply in some localities dropped to once every two or three days and Mudasarlova reservoir dried up completely. Apartment dwellers across the city's roughly 8,000 complexes were among the hardest hit. A Rs 725-crore 24x7 supply project for the Madhurawada zone was due for its foundation stone in September 2026, but for most of the city storage still decides comfort.

How we fix it

A multi-tank level controller captures every minute of supply into the sump, then fills each block's overhead tank in order from one pump set, so storage is shared fairly and nothing overflows.

Borewells turning brackish

A 2021 study of 30 groundwater samples along the coast from Bheemili to Paravada found total dissolved solids above WHO limits in every sample and chloride above limits in about 70 per cent, with some samples prone to seawater intrusion. GVMC says groundwater in some urban areas is now more than 20 m below ground.

How we fix it

An RO plant with proper pre-filtration makes brackish borewell water fit for drinking and kitchens, and the RO controller tracks feed pressure and output quality so the membranes last.

Tanker days and dry borewells

GVMC fixed tanker rates at Rs 900 per 5,000 litres and opened a booking call centre, yet residents reported operators preferring hotels and commercial buyers. When borewells fail as well, a society needs to know exactly how much water it holds.

How we fix it

The Devyami app shows live sump and tank levels, pump run-hours and dry-run trips, and alerts the committee when storage falls below a set mark, so tankers are booked before taps go dry, not after.

Cyclones and long outages

When Cyclone Hudhud struck on 12 October 2014 with winds of about 185 km/h, the city was without power for days and there was no piped supply. The motor pumps in houses and apartments stood idle until electricity returned.

How we fix it

An APCON motor driver protects each pump from under and over voltage and single phasing when lines are restored or a generator takes over, so the first hours after a storm do not cost you a motor.

Industry, port and high-rise pressure

Of the roughly 320 MLD GVMC supplied in August 2026, about 90 MLD went to industries, and a Rs 150-crore pipeline is planned to link the Narava treatment plant with units along Port Road. Plants and tall buildings alike depend on their own pump rooms for steady pressure.

How we fix it

Devyami's multi-pump controller runs up to six pumps as one system with VFD and PID control, holding set pressure across process lines or floors and rotating duty so no pump wears out early.

Through the year

Visakhapatnam's water, season by season

Summer

The hot months draw down the rain-fed reservoirs, so the water in your sump and the health of your borewell decide how comfortably you reach the monsoon.

Monsoon

A weak June and July can leave the city short even in the rainy season, as in 2026, when deficits linked to El Niño pushed groundwater to record lows.

The post-monsoon months set up the next year; in 2026 officials aimed to fill the Yeleru reservoir to 15 TMC by the end of October through the Purushothapatnam lift.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Visakhapatnam run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Visakhapatnam

What people here ask us

Our MVP Colony apartment gets GVMC water only every other day. How do we make it last?

Capture all of it and share it well. Devyami's multi-tank level controller fills the sump whenever the main is live, then tops up each block's overhead tank in turn without overflow, and the IoT app shows the committee how many days of storage remain.

Our borewell near the beach has turned salty. Can it be treated?

Yes, within limits. Coastal studies have found high dissolved solids and chloride in groundwater from Bheemili to Paravada, which RO handles well with the right pre-filtration. Devyami tests your water first, sizes the RO plant to it, and fits an RO controller to watch pressure and quality.

How do we protect our pumps when power comes back after a cyclone?

Restored lines and generators can deliver low voltage or a missing phase, and that is when motors burn. An APCON motor driver trips on under and over voltage, single phasing, overload and dry run, and restarts the pump only once supply is healthy.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Visakhapatnam?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Visakhapatnam's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
