Smart water solutions in Chennai Monsoon-fed lakes, desalinated seawater, salty borewells

Chennai has no perennial river, so each summer depends on how well the last northeast monsoon filled its lakes. We help homes and apartments store, protect, treat and track water through the dry months and the floods alike.

How water reaches you in Chennai

Chennai Metrowater supplied around 1,246 MLD on one September 2026 day, mostly from Poondi, Puzhal, Chembarambakkam and other monsoon-fed lakes, with Veeranam and Krishna water in support and about 154 MLD from desalination plants at Minjur and Nemmeli. The city remembers 2019, when its main reservoirs held under 1% of capacity and water came by train from Jolarpettai, and the floods of 2015 and 2023. From Anna Nagar to Sholinganallur, we automate sumps and tanks, treat hard, saline borewell water, install dewatering pumps for flood-prone basements and fit heat pumps suited to the humid coast.

  1. Step 1

    Monsoon-fed lakes

Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram, Chembarambakkam and Kannankottai-Thervoy Kandigai store the monsoon, topped up by Veeranam and by Krishna water from Kandaleru.

  2. Step 2

    Treatment and desalination

Lake water is treated for supply while the Minjur and Nemmeli plants turn seawater into drinking water, with a 400 MLD plant under construction at Perur.

  3. Step 3

    Metrowater network

CMWSSB distributes it through its pipe network, with groundwater and quarry water adding small volumes, mainly in added areas.

  4. Step 4

    Your sump

Metrowater supply, bought water and borewell water meet in the sump, and a pump lifts it to the terrace tanks.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Chennai's water, honestly

What Chennai throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Reservoirs that can run dry

Chennai has no perennial water source and depends largely on the monsoon. In summer 2019 its main reservoirs held less than 1% of capacity, and a train brought 25 lakh litres from Jolarpettai.

How we fix it

Level sensors and the Devyami app show how much storage you hold, alert you when the sump drops below a set mark and log daily use, so rationing decisions rest on numbers.

Hard, saline groundwater

CGWB found total hardness above permissible limits in about 55% of city samples, in-situ salinity in Mandaveli, Anna Nagar, Indira Nagar, Velachery and Taramani, and signs of seawater intrusion at Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur. A 2026 study rated nearly a third of samples poor or unfit to drink.

How we fix it

We install softeners for bathroom and appliance water and RO for drinking, with an RO controller that tracks feed pressure and treated-water quality as borewell salinity shifts.

Floods that reach the basement

Cyclone Michaung dropped around 300 mm on the city on 4 December 2023, waterlogging Velachery, Pallikaranai, Perungudi and Madipakkam and leaving many areas without power. The 2015 northeast monsoon was the heaviest since 1918.

How we fix it

Dewatering pumps with automatic level start clear basements, lift pits and pump rooms as the water rises, sized for cyclone rain rather than an ordinary shower.

Several sources, one set of tanks

Many buildings combine Metrowater supply with borewells and bought water, and every building in Tamil Nadu has had to provide rainwater harvesting since 2003. Getting the right water into the right tank by hand is a daily chore.

How we fix it

A multi-tank level controller fills several tanks in order from one pump set, so drinking-quality and borewell water can stay in separate tanks while everything runs hands-free.

Humid coast, daily hot water

Chennai's humidity usually runs between 65% and 84%, and mean temperatures sit between about 24 and 33 degrees C. Warm, moist air like this is easy for a heat pump to draw heat from.

How we fix it

A heat pump managed by our heat-pump controller gives apartments, hostels and hotels steady hot water at a far lower running cost than electric geysers.

Through the year

Chennai's water, season by season

Summer

From April the lakes drop and bought-water demand rises, so storage, sump alarms and dry-run protection earn their keep.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

The northeast monsoon from October to December brings most of the year's rain, often through cyclones and depressions that flood low-lying areas.

Winter

January and February are the mildest months, but the air stays humid, which keeps a heat pump working efficiently.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Chennai run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Chennai

What people here ask us

Our borewell water in Velachery is salty. Will a softener fix it?

A softener removes hardness, not salt. For saline borewell water, drinking water needs RO, so we usually pair a softener for bathrooms and appliances with an RO plant for the kitchen. An RO controller keeps watch on pressure and output quality as salinity changes through the year.

How do we protect our apartment's basement during a cyclone?

Keep a dewatering pump with automatic level start in the lowest pit, sized for heavy inflow, and keep electrical panels well above past flood marks. With a level sensor on the basement sump, the Devyami app alerts the facility team the moment water starts rising.

What is the best water heater for a flat in Chennai?

In Chennai's warm, humid air a heat pump is hard to beat on running cost, and unlike a solar heater it keeps working through cloudy monsoon weeks. A compact unit suits a single flat; for a block or hostel we design a central heat pump with our controller managing temperature and timing.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Chennai?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Chennai's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
