Smart water solutions in Nagpur Pench water, an unfinished 24x7 grid, 45-degree summers

Nagpur's taps depend on the Pench reservoirs and the Kanhan river, a 24x7 network still being finished and power that sometimes trips at the plants. We help homes, hospitals and factories keep water moving through all of it.

How water reaches you in Nagpur

Nagpur receives around 765–786 million litres a day from five treatment plants: Pench I to IV, fed from Navegaon Khairi, and the Kanhan plant, which covers nearly 40 percent of capacity. NMC distributes it with operator Orange City Water, but the 24x7 project is still incomplete, and areas such as Gittikhadan and Samata Nagar have reported shortages or tanker supply. Add summers that cross 45 °C and borewells with nitrate in the east and south, and the case for Devyami's protected pump controllers, treatment systems and live tank monitoring in Dharampeth, Manish Nagar or Hingna is plain.

  1. Step 1

    Pench reservoirs

Totladoh and Navegaon Khairi on the Pench hold most of the city's raw water, and in the 2019 drought Totladoh fell to an all-time low of about 6 percent, leaving Nagpur to draw on Navegaon Khairi alone.

  2. Step 2

    Five treatment plants

Raw water pumped from Navegaon Khairi feeds the Pench I to IV plants, while the 235–240 MLD Kanhan plant draws river water through three intake wells.

  3. Step 3

    ESRs and mains

Treated water is pumped to elevated storage reservoirs across the city and released into the distribution network that Orange City Water operates for NMC.

  4. Step 4

    Your sump

Homes and societies receive it into a ground sump or overhead tank, and a single hour of power tripping at a plant means about 10 MLD less in the system.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

What Nagpur throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Power trips at the plants

In April 2026 the mayor noted that one hour of power tripping costs the system about 10 MLD, a trip at Navegaon Khairi about 22 MLD, and that restarting takes at least 30 minutes. Corporators have blamed frequent tripping for irregular supply.

How we fix it

A motor driver at your sump runs the pump only when there is water to lift and fills the overhead tank whenever supply arrives, while guarding the motor against dry running, overload, voltage swings and single phasing.

A 24x7 network still unfinished

At the new NMC House's first general body meeting in March 2026, corporators reported severe shortages in Gittikhadan, tankers still serving Samata Nagar and inflated bills, and the administration said nearly 50 areas were getting polluted water. The project remains incomplete despite a five-year extension.

How we fix it

LoRa level sensors and the Devyami app record when water actually arrives, how much your tanks hold and how consumption trends, giving you data to check bills and plan tankers.

Nitrate and effluent in groundwater

CGWB's Nagpur studies found nitrate contamination in eastern and southern parts of the city, the end point of waste carried by the Nag river, and effluent in shallow groundwater around the Hingna and Kalmeshwar MIDC areas.

How we fix it

RO is the dependable way to bring nitrate down for drinking; our RO controller watches feed pressure, product quality and tank level so the plant protects itself and stops when the tank is full.

Cold snaps in a hot city

Nagpur is known for heat, but in the 2025–26 winter about 50 of 60 days ran below normal, and nights stayed under 10 °C for about a week on two occasions.

How we fix it

A solar water heater paired with a heat pump on our controller covers both seasons: free heat from the sun on most days and efficient backup on cold, hazy mornings.

Flash floods along the Nag

In the early hours of 23 September 2023, about 90 mm fell in just over two hours and 109 mm by 5.30 am. Ambazari lake overflowed into the Nag river, flooding Ambazari, Sitabuldi and Mor Bhavan.

How we fix it

Two dewatering pumps on a twin motor driver take turns as duty pump and start from a level sensor as soon as water collects in a basement or lift pit, so a 2 am cloudburst does not depend on someone being awake.

Nagpur's water, season by season

Summer

May routinely brings 45 °C days; IMD recorded 45.6 °C in May 2024, and the city's May record is 47.9 °C.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

When the Kanhan rises, its intake pumps draw in silt and supply to areas such as Lakadganj and Sakkardara is cut until the river settles.

Dewatering pumps and UV treatment →

Winter

Short but sharp: in 2025–26, nights stayed below 10 °C for about a week, twice, which is when a heat pump earns its keep.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Nagpur run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Nagpur

What people here ask us

Water comes at odd hours in our Nagpur colony. How do we stop running the pump by hand?

Install a Devyami motor driver at the sump. It senses water, runs the pump until the overhead tank is full and stops, with protection against dry running, overload, voltage problems and single phasing. Pair it with LoRa sensors and the Devyami app if you want an alert the moment supply arrives.

Our borewell water in east Nagpur tastes off. What treatment do we need?

Test first, because nitrate is a known problem in parts of eastern and southern Nagpur. If nitrate or TDS is high, an RO plant with our RO controller is the right answer for drinking water; for general use, a multigrade filter and softener may be enough, depending on the report.

Is a heat pump worth it in Nagpur when summers are so hot?

Yes, for hostels, hospitals, hotels and large homes that need hot water every day. Pair a solar water heater with a heat pump on our heat pump controller: the sun does most of the work, and the heat pump covers the winter spells when nights drop below 10 °C.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Nagpur?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Nagpur's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
