Smart water solutions in Patna A Ganga city that still drinks from deep borewells

Patna sits on the Ganga but draws most of its municipal water from deep aquifers, with treated river water planned for every ward by 2029. We help homes and buildings run well on both.

From source to your tap

How water reaches you in Patna

Patna sits on the Ganga, yet its taps are fed mostly from deep tubewells that PMC runs ward by ward, with new pump houses and borewells still being added in the Kankarbagh, Bankipur, Patliputra and Patna City zones. Under AMRUT 2.0, BUIDCo plans intake wells at Digha and Gaighat and treated Ganga water for all 75 wards by 2029. Until then the deep aquifer carries the city while water levels fall, and CGWB reports arsenic in shallow aquifers in parts of Danapur and Maner blocks. Devyami's motor protection, treatment and water heating are built for exactly this mix.

  1. Step 1

    Deep aquifers

Most municipal water today is pumped from deep tubewells in the Ganga alluvium, aquifers that CGWB describes as under intensive development for the city's supply.

  2. Step 2

    Ward pump houses

PMC pump houses push this water into ward pipelines, and chlorinators are being installed at 93 water-supply centres.

  3. Step 3

    Ganga, from 2029

BUIDCo's AMRUT 2.0 plan draws river water at Digha and Gaighat into a central treatment plant, designed for about 155 litres per person per day.

  4. Step 4

    Sump and roof

At home, water lands in a sump or straight in the roof tank, and where supply is thin a private borewell makes up the difference.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

What Patna throws at your water system, and the fix for each

Water tables falling year on year

PHED data put the depth to groundwater in Patna Sadar at about 20.9 feet in May 2025 and 25.9 feet in May 2026, a drop of roughly five feet in a year, with Danapur and Maner falling too. Officials blame concrete cover that sends rain into drains instead of the ground, and PMC's own repair rounds include replacing burnt pump motors.

How we fix it

An APCON motor driver stops the borewell pump the moment it runs dry, guards against overload, voltage swings and single phasing, and fills the tank automatically so no pump runs longer than it needs to.

Arsenic in the shallow layers

CGWB reports arsenic in shallow aquifers in parts of Danapur, Maner, Barh and Bakhtiyarpur blocks, while deeper aquifers below about 120 m have been found free of it. A shallow private borewell in Danapur or towards Maner is the first one to test.

How we fix it

After a lab test, Devyami recommends drawing from a deeper aquifer where possible and fitting an RO plant with an RO controller for drinking and cooking water, so quality and pressure are watched continuously.

Low-lying colonies that flood

In the last week of September 2019, days of heavy rain left Rajendra Nagar, Kankarbagh, Beur and Kumhrar under water, the city's sump houses stopped working, and residents were trapped for days. A plan for 22 advance drainage pumping stations drawn up after the flood was still largely unbuilt in 2023.

How we fix it

Submersible dewatering pumps on float switches, with panels mounted above the flood line, keep basements, pump rooms and ground-level sumps from being swamped while the city's drains catch up.

Proper winters, cold mornings

CGWB describes Patna's climate as quite hot in summer and fairly cold in winter, with January the coldest month; early-morning temperatures fell to around 9°C in January 2026. Hot water is a daily need for a good part of the year.

How we fix it

A heat pump water heater delivers hot water on far less electricity than a geyser and does not depend on sunshine, with our heat pump controller managing temperature and timing; solar water heaters suit homes with clear rooftops.

Two sources during the switchover

PMC is still adding pipelines, pump houses and high-yield borewells, with more than Rs 500 crore approved for water supply in September 2026, while the treated Ganga scheme targets 2029. Until then, many buildings will draw from both the municipal line and their own borewell.

How we fix it

The Devyami app shows which source is filling your tanks, how long each pump has run and when municipal supply arrives, so you can use the main when it flows and rest the borewell.

Through the year

Patna's water, season by season

Summer

From March the heat builds to a May peak and groundwater levels drop with it, which is when dry-run protection on borewell pumps earns its keep.

Dry-run protection and usage alerts →

Monsoon

Most of the year's rain falls in July and August, and in low-lying colonies like Rajendra Nagar and Kankarbagh a few heavy days can mean waterlogged basements.

Winter

January is the coldest month, with early mornings around 9°C in 2026, and hot water stops being a luxury.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Patna run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Patna

What people here ask us

Our borewell motor in Kankarbagh keeps burning out. What protection do we need?

Burnt motors usually trace back to dry running, voltage swings or a missing phase; even PMC replaces burnt pump motors on its own network. An APCON motor driver cuts the pump off for each of these faults and restarts it only when conditions are safe, while level sensors stop it once the tank is full.

We live in Danapur. Is our groundwater safe from arsenic?

CGWB has reported arsenic in shallow aquifers in parts of Danapur and Maner blocks, while deeper aquifers have been found free of it, so the depth of your borewell matters. Get the water tested; if arsenic shows up, Devyami can fit an RO plant with an RO controller for drinking and cooking water.

Heat pump or solar water heater for a Patna winter?

Both work here. A solar water heater is the cheapest to run on clear days, while a heat pump keeps delivering on cold, overcast mornings using far less power than a geyser. Larger homes, hostels and hotels often pair the two, with our heat pump controller managing the backup.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Patna?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Patna's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
