Smart water solutions in Kolkata River water for the city, tubewells for the towers

Kolkata's mains run on the Hooghly, yet many newer apartment towers in south Kolkata still pump their own groundwater. We help you manage both, from the ferrule to the roof tank.

How water reaches you in Kolkata

Kolkata drinks the Hooghly. KMC's Palta works in the north, running since the 1860s, and Garden Reach in the south treat river water for most of the city, while Dhapa is being expanded for the EM Bypass belt. Yet many towers in Behala, Joka, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia still run on deep tubewells, drawing water that can be hard, iron-laden or occasionally arsenic-bearing from a table that has dropped along the Bypass. Devyami's level controllers keep the sump-to-roof cycle in check, our treatment trains make tubewell water fit for use, and dewatering pumps stand ready when the drains give up.

  1. Step 1

    Hooghly intakes

Raw water is drawn from the Hooghly at Palta in the north and Garden Reach in the south, with deep tubewells adding to supply in many wards.

  2. Step 2

    Treat and transmit

Palta's treated water travels by trunk main to the Tallah reservoir, while Garden Reach serves south Kolkata up to the EM Bypass and the neighbouring Maheshtala and Pujali municipalities.

  3. Step 3

    Ward networks

KMC's pipelines branch into each ward, and tail-end pockets in parts of Tollygunge and Jadavpur still see shortfalls and tanker deliveries.

  4. Step 4

    Sump to roof

At your building, water lands in an underground sump or an old roof tank and a pump has to lift it, which is exactly where automation saves both water and motors.

  5. Where we take over

    Your tank, automated

Sensors read every tank, an APCON controller runs and protects the pump, and the app shows it all on your phone.

Kolkata's water, honestly

What Kolkata throws at your water system, and the fix for each

South Kolkata towers on tubewells

Many high-rises in Behala, Joka, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia still lack treated Garden Reach supply and rely on groundwater; one Joka complex of about 1,875 flats is reported to be entirely groundwater-dependent. City groundwater ranges from fresh to brackish, with high hardness, iron and occasional arsenic and manganese. KMC has planned a new 40 MGD plant at Garden Reach for these areas, but no completion date has been announced.

How we fix it

We start with a water test and build the train it calls for: multigrade and iron-removal filters, a softener for hardness, and an RO stage for drinking water, with the RO controller watching quality and pressure.

Two sources, one overhead tank

Across south and east Kolkata, many buildings take KMC water into a sump and top up from a deep tubewell, often with nobody watching either pump. Official figures already put losses at about 30 per cent of supplied water, so an overflowing roof tank is the last thing the network needs.

How we fix it

A twin motor driver with level sensors runs the sump pump and the tubewell pump with shared duty, stops at full tank, and trips on dry run, overload or single phasing. Wireless LoRa sensors save running cable up an old staircase.

A falling table along the Bypass

Groundwater levels have declined sharply in central and south Kolkata and along the EM Bypass, where high-rises have come up. In peak summer, KMC tankers have had to supply some housing complexes as well as the slums they usually serve.

How we fix it

The Devyami app shows tank levels, pump run-hours and dry-run trips live, so a society can see its tubewell's yield slipping well before the taps run dry and plan a second source in time.

Cloudbursts and flooded basements

Overnight on 23 September 2025, KMC gauges recorded well over 250 mm in several southern and eastern areas, including 332 mm at Garia Kamdahari and 285 mm at Jodhpur Park. Water entered homes and residential complexes.

How we fix it

Submersible dewatering pumps with float-switch auto start clear basements, lift pits and pump rooms as water rises, and we mount control panels above the flood line so the electrics stay dry.

Pressure for New Town high-rises

In New Town, PHED maintains the water supply on behalf of NKDA and brings treated water to the plot. Getting it to the twentieth floor at steady pressure, at every hour of the day, is the building's own job.

How we fix it

A multi-pump controller runs up to six pumps as one system, using VFD and PID control to hold a set pressure across all floors and rotating duty so every pump shares the hours.

As the water table drops, tubewell yields fall, and at the peak of summer KMC has had to send tankers to some housing complexes.

Short, violent downpours are the real risk: one night in September 2025 put over 250 mm on several southern wards and flooded homes and complexes.

January nights average around 14°C at Alipore, mild enough that a solar water heater or heat pump covers a household's hot water comfortably.

Watch it run

Watch a building in Kolkata run its own water

This is the same diagram our customers see in the app. The sump and the overhead tank are both sensed, and one APCON controller decides when the pump runs.

  • The pump starts when the overhead tank is low, but only if the sump has water to give
  • It stops at your full level, so the tank never overflows
  • Dry run, overload and voltage faults trip it before the motor is damaged
  • Your phone shows each level, each pump run and each alert as it happens

Questions from Kolkata

What people here ask us

Our Behala apartment runs entirely on a deep tubewell. What treatment do we actually need?

Start with a test, because Kolkata groundwater ranges from fresh to brackish and is often hard and iron-rich, with arsenic in some pockets. Devyami then sizes the train: multigrade and iron filters for the whole building, a softener if hardness is scaling your geysers, and an RO plant with an RO controller for drinking water. The IoT app lets the committee check plant status without visiting the pump room.

How do we stop the roof tank overflowing when both KMC water and the tubewell feed it?

Fit an APCON twin motor driver with level sensors in the sump and the overhead tank. It runs a pump only when there is water to lift and room to fill, shuts off at full, and protects both motors from dry run, overload and single phasing. In older buildings where running cable to the roof is a chore, our wireless LoRa sensors do the job.

Our basement and lift pit flooded in the September 2025 rain. What should we install?

A pair of submersible dewatering pumps on float switches, so one starts automatically as water rises and the second joins if the first cannot keep up. Devyami mounts the panel above the flood line with full motor protection, and the IoT app can alert your facility manager the moment the pumps start.

Do you install and service Devyami systems in Kolkata?

Yes. Tell us about your building, society or factory and our engineers design the system around Kolkata's water. A Devyami dealer or installer then installs, commissions and services it locally, and every connected controller can be checked remotely through our platform. The first site consultation is free.

Will the automation keep working without internet or after a power cut?

Yes. Level switching, pressure control, schedules and every motor protection run inside the controller on your wall, not in the cloud. The internet only carries the live view and alerts to your phone. The controller keeps its own real-time clock and remembers its delays through a power cut.

Can you automate my existing pumps and tanks without new wiring?

Usually, yes. The APCON Motor Driver takes the old starter panel’s place on the wall, on the pump and tanks you already have. Wireless level sensors reach terrace and underground tanks where running a cable would mean breaking walls. A single-pump retrofit is usually done in a few hours.
